Best dictation app for Mac in 2026: what to compare
Four things decide it — where the model runs, whether you need an account, how you pay, and how accurate it is on your voice. Everything else is a detail you can change later. This page compares the five apps people actually shortlist on those four, and says plainly where Inmost loses.
The short answer
If the words are private or you work offline, buy one that runs the model on your Mac: Inmost at $39 once, or superwhisper if you want a subscription with a lifetime option and a wider engine list. If you dictate across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, or you want the cleanup to be someone else's problem, Wispr Flow is the more polished product and costs $15 per user per month. If you mostly want text out of recordings rather than live dictation, MacWhisper is the better tool and cheaper. If you only need a sentence here and there and never say anything sensitive, the dictation built into macOS is free and already installed.
1. Where the model runs
This is the question that decides everything else. A model on your disk means the audio has no upload path — you can prove it by turning off Wi-Fi and dictating. A model on someone's GPU means the audio is a request, and the privacy page is a promise rather than a mechanism. There is a thirty-second test that tells you which one an app is.
- On your Mac: Inmost, superwhisper (local models), MacWhisper, Apple Dictation.
- On their servers: Wispr Flow — no offline mode, so every dictation is uploaded.
The trade is real: a datacenter GPU can run a model 20 times larger than one that has to fit in your laptop's memory, so a cloud service will usually win on the hardest audio — heavy accents, crosstalk, bad microphones. The accuracy difference is smaller than the price difference, but it is not zero.
2. Whether you need an account
An account is how a subscription is enforced and how usage is metered. A one-time purchase does not need either, so it does not need a login, an email address, or a device limit. Check what an app asks for before you install it: microphone, accessibility and speech recognition are the only permissions live dictation needs. Full Disk Access, a password, or "sign in to continue" means the app has a server in the loop.
Inmost's license is a signed key file checked offline on your Mac, so the app never phones home to check whether you paid. How to set up dictation with no account.
3. How you pay
| App | Model runs | Price shape | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inmost | Your Mac | $39 once, 30-day refund | 24 Oct 2026 |
| Wispr Flow | Their servers | Free tier; Pro $15/user/month | 24 Oct 2026 |
| superwhisper | Your Mac, cloud optional | Free tier; subscription with a lifetime option | 24 Oct 2026 |
| MacWhisper | Your Mac | Free version; one-time Pro license | 24 Oct 2026 |
| Apple Dictation | Your Mac or Apple's servers, depending on the language | Free, built in | 24 Oct 2026 |
Prices are the vendors' own, read from their pages on the date in the table; subscription products change theirs without notice, so check before you buy. A subscription is not greed — cloud inference costs money per minute, so it has to be priced that way. The question is whether you want to pay per month for something that costs the vendor nothing after the download.
4. Accuracy, measured rather than claimed
Accuracy claims are where dictation apps are least honest, because a word error rate means nothing without the test set. The two things to ask: which set, and who ran it.
Inmost runs every engine in its pack against LibriSpeech test-clean — 200 clips, 4,732 words, public and license-free — with tools/benchmark.py in the repository, so anyone can repeat the number. On 24 October 2026, on an M5 Max:
| Model | Word error rate | Speed | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granite Speech 4.1 2B | 1.37% | 25× real time | 5.0 GB |
| Qwen3-ASR 1.7B | 1.67% | 40× real time | 2.9 GB |
| Whisper large-v3-turbo | 2.63% | 33× real time | 1.8 GB |
Read that table as a floor, not a promise. Clean read speech is the easiest case there is; a name, a product codename, or a noisy room will cost more than these numbers suggest. What fixes it is not a bigger model but a dictionary entry for the words you actually say.
The full pack — 23 models, with published leaderboard figures kept separate from the ones measured here — is on the measured section of the home page.
Where Inmost is the wrong choice
Being straight about this is worth more than a comparison table that flatters us.
- You need Windows, Android, or a phone. Inmost is macOS only. Wispr Flow and superwhisper ship everywhere.
- You dictate hour-long interviews or field recordings. That is MacWhisper's job, and it does it better and more cheaply than a live dictation app.
- You want the lowest error rate at any cost. A cloud model with a GPU behind it will beat anything that fits in laptop memory on hard audio.
- You want AI rewriting of every sentence. Inmost tidies punctuation, capitalisation and filler words; it is not a writing assistant.
Frequently asked
Is a free dictation app good enough? If you dictate a sentence at a time into Slack, Apple's built-in dictation is fine and costs nothing. It becomes frustrating at paragraph length, and on some languages it sends audio to Apple rather than running on the device.
Does a one-time license include updates? For a year from purchase, yes, and the copy you bought keeps working after that. There is no version you have to buy twice to keep using what you paid for.
What if I don't like it? Thirty days, full refund, and the installed copy keeps working. Inmost's license is verified offline, so there is no remote switch to turn off.
How long is the trial? Ten minutes of finished dictation, counted only when text actually lands. No card, no email.
Inmost runs speech recognition on your Mac, costs $39 once, and has the measurements to prove what it claims. Download the trial.
